Chloë and Ben’s Wedding Blessing by the small Lac de Fredyières in the French Alps near Grenoble

Chloë and Ben with Ben's younger brother, Sandy, after the ceremony
Last week I had the great pleasure and honour of conducting the wedding blessing of Chloë Salles and Ben Wood, very good friends of Susanna's (my wife) and mine. It took place in a stunning setting by the small Lac de Fredyières in the French Alps near Grenoble. It was a splendidly cosmopolitan occasion with family and friends not only from France but from Australia, New Zealand, Belgium, the USA, the UK, Egypt, Denmark and Germany.

Below you'll find the ceremony (in French and English) and a few photos as well. Susanna and I didn't take many because we were, as you might imagine, rather wrapped up in the joyously unfolding event but, hopefully, these will give you a just little flavour of the wonderful day and setting. When I get some more photos sent to me in a week or so I'll put a few of the ceremony up here too.

Many thanks must go to the congregation of the Cambridge Unitarian Church (where I am the minister) for giving me the opportunity to travel to France to conduct this ceremony.

Chloë and Ben’s Wedding Blessing

Welcome/Accueil

Welcome to you all, parents, family and friends. We have traveled here by many different roads, and come from many different countries and spiritual and philosophical traditions, but the reason we are here today is the same; we are gathered to celebrate and bless the love, trust, commitment and marriage of Chloë and Ben. We are delighted to rejoice with them in their union.

And so now, to begin, I invite you to join with me in a short moment of silence reflecting on our joyous reason for being here today.

A moment of silence followed by a short meditation/Un moment de silence, suivi d’une brève méditation

Let the gift of this day be enough to fill our hearts with a steady and ever- renewed conviction: that a sacred, natural goodness and power lies at the heart of all being.

Pause

Pause

Let us be present to ourselves, conscious of this moment dropped into the stream of time in this beautiful place on this, our shared home, the planet earth. Let us not be distracted by anxious thoughts of any other time, nor beside ourselves with longing for any other place. Let the goodness of being here, of being now, of being itself, be enough.

Pause

Pause

Let the strength of good-will be felt within us, and let us say to ourselves, it is enough—enough to carry our lives forward to whatever places we may want to go, in whatever time we are ready to go forth. In good-will we are at one with the sustaining power of being itself.

Pause

Pause

The lake
Once we asked for rules to tell us what was good: but now, with growing maturity, we have begun to outgrow the way of unthinking obedience. Once we asked for a love that would satisfy our longings for happiness, but with growing recognitions of love—the love whose happiness lies in the happiness of the other—we have begun to outgrow the way of self-centredness.

Pause

Pause

Let us make of our lives parables, stories that tell: This is what the human good is like, this is what good will is like, this is what our life together was meant to be.  May it be so.

Short Address/Allocution

And so here, now, are two short stories that tell us something of what the human good is like and what our life together was meant to be.

A few months ago Chloë and Ben recounted to me the story about how they met and, later on, Ben wrote to me saying how his head sometimes hurt when he thought about the sheer good fortune (la chance) that conspired to bring the two of them together at a music festival on the beautiful, tiny island of Iceland. As Ben realised, had he and his group of Tasmanian friends taken only ten seconds longer to reach the queue for the gig then he wouldn’t have been standing directly behind Chloë and we would not all be gathered here today in this beautiful place to celebrate their marriage.

But la chance, Lady Luck or Dame Fortune—that the ancient Romans personified as the Goddess Fortuna and the ancient Greeks as the Goddess Tyche—cannot take all the credit for their friendship, love and now marriage; after all many other strangers will have been brought together in that same queue by chance and I’m pretty certain that this will have been the only marriage to have followed! This is because we must not forget the active, creative rôle played by Ben and Chloë with their shared willingness to risk opening themselves up to such chance encounters, to new experiences and, therefore, to new and hitherto unexpected possibilities of being-in-the-world.

Arriving in the afternoon for the picnic
As I thought about their story it began to resonate with another beautiful story told to Susanna (my wife) and me by Chloë’s father and mother, Robert and Carol-Leigh, one evening in Bédarrides during the summer of 2008.  It turned out that they had met in England wholly by chance whilst Robert was hitchhiking to Bristol and it was Carol-Leigh who stopped to give him a lift. The rest, as they say, is history. Once again in this story we find ourselves in the presence of Lady Luck, Dame Fortune; but what is true of queues for gigs is also true of hitchhikers and not all hitchhikers make friends, fall in love, marry and have children. The truth is that as hitchhikers they were willing to risk opening themselves up to chance encounters, to new experiences and, therefore, to new and hitherto unexpected possibilities of being-in-the-world. They both passed many good things on to their children Chloë and Claire-Louise, but this capacity to accept the risky gifts Lady Luck brings us—whether on a road to Bristol or in a queue in Iceland—is, to my mind, one of the most important.

Of course, this extraordinary process never ends for Lady Luck, Dame Fortune is always bringing us countless chance moments of connection and it is this sacred (though wholly natural) gift that constantly keeps the future creatively open to us. Even death cannot stop this miraculous process of life because new encounters will continue to bring with them the chance for new life, new love and new possibilities.

The start of the picnic
I also have no doubt that Ben’s own family will be able to tell us other uplifting stories that speak this same truth and I, for one, look forward to getting to know them and hearing some of their own tales of new life, new love and new possibilities as I have been privileged to come to know those of la famille Salles.

But life is not only made up of wonderful road-trips or fantastic gigs and so none of us must forget that this extraordinary natural process of life operates just as much in our ordinary, daily lives. For life to be truly creative and meaningful we need to risk embracing the new life, new love and new possibilities that come to us in our everyday activities whether we are washing the dishes, hoovering the flat, answering emails or walking the dog—whether Lenny or Chippie—and, for me, this beautiful insight has never been better put than by the eighth-century Chinese Zen poet, Layman P’ang (740-808) who wrote:

The La Gelinotte restaurant by the lake
My daily affairs are quite ordinary;
but I’m in total harmony with them.
I don’t hold onto anything, don’t reject anything; Nowhere an obstacle or conflict.
Who cares about wealth and honour?
Even the poorest thing shines.
My miraculous power and spiritual activity:
Drawing water and carrying wood.

So Chloë and Ben—today is another big and beautiful day and, as such, you (and we) should enjoy it to the full, celebrating the wonderful way Lady Luck, Dame Fortune first brought you (and us) together—but, tomorrow and every day following, may you (and we) never forget the
miraculous power and spiritual activity of doing well the simple daily things together which remind us that all of life is a miracle and, to those who know how to live well and accept the risky gifts of Lady Luck, Dame Fortune, even the poorest thing will always shine.

Me, Toto and Susanna arrive

Toto (banjo) and me (bass guitar) playing in the band afterwards

Night falls over the lake

Ben and Chloë about to dance
Mes affaires quotidiennes sont plutôt ordinaires ;
Je ne m’accroche à rien, ne rejette rien ;

Think not that you have finished anything here today. This service is but a way-mark on your journey together.Today before all of us and in this beautiful place you have formally committed to keep the light of love that you have lit between you burning through the years. Keep it warm and bright with mutual concern. Replenish the source of its light with daily care, with gentleness and respect.Take it with you through all the highways and byways of life.Try it, but do not let it burn dry with indifference or flicker or grow dim through your carelessness. Care for it. Rejoice in it. Make it truly creative in your lives and in the larger life of which all of us are a part. May it be so.
